How to write character descriptions

Reminds me of the screenwriting adage: character is action. And character is also dialogue. Keep the physical descriptions to a minimum (Orson Scott Card also advocates this, and puts it beautifully into practice). How can the answer be improved? If youre writing a first person narrative, avoid having the viewpoint character describe themselves in painstaking detail. Instead, bring in key characteristics that are relevant to who they are (e. g. theyre overweight and trying to shed excess pounds or theyre unusually tall short and it bothers them).
